Part 43: Following the California Zephyr | Steam Locomotives, Coal Palaces & Chief Wapello Cemetery!
#AgencyIowa #BataviaIowa #ChiefWapello #BlackHawkWar
Part 43 of our California Zephyr route adventure — and Part 4 of Day 13 — continues through southern Iowa with more forgotten history, railroad heritage, and fascinating small towns.
We begin driving through historic Ottumwa, admiring more of the city’s beautiful historic architecture on our way to the old train station. Although the station initially appears closed, John explores the loading area and shares a 2006 photograph of a power plant once visible nearby that seems to have disappeared. Meanwhile, Carol discovers a way inside the station, revealing an incredible exhibit dedicated to Ottumwa’s famous Coal Palace of the late 1800s.
Outside the station, John discovers a huge 1930s steam locomotive once operated by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad for its luxury passenger trains.
Next we travel to Agency, where we discuss the town’s history along with the broader story of the Black Hawk War. Along the drive, John shares a historic print showing what Black Hawk looked like.
We then visit the Chief Wapello Cemetery, exploring the remarkable friendship between Chief Wapello and General Joseph Street while visiting their gravesites and the nearby memorials.
The episode concludes in tiny Batavia, where the quiet streets and enormous cemetery create one final memorable scene as we continue following the route of the legendary California Zephyr across America.
