Class-E SSTC - Playing with frequency

Finally got the gate drive right: a good gate drive IC, followed by a hefty push-pull emitter follower, made from transistors with decent power dissipation. Risetimes and falltimes were ~15 ns. For once, it didn't blow up!

Input power to the coil was rectified, but unfiltered. I didn't measure the voltage, but it was probably about 150 V peak at the maximum due to my isolation transformer (both because it steps down and because it was loaded beyond its maximum). Because this is Class-E, the MOSFET drains saw about three times that.

For safety, there was an isolation transformer between the output of the variac and the input to the bridge rectifier.

For this testing, I was using a function generator to control the switching frequency. There are provisions in the design for feedback control.

The longest sparks were maybe 7".

Resonant frequency is about 1.7 MHz.
