Claude Code vs Codex: 3 Differences Before You Pay

Claude Code vs OpenAI Codex. Three differences that matter before you pay for a subscription.

Difference 1: the model. Claude Code runs Claude models. Opus 5.5 is the default on Pro and Max. Codex runs GPT models. GPT-6 Sol is the flagship. Different labs, different strengths.

Difference 2: the price floor. Claude Code starts at $20 a month on Pro. The free tier does not include Claude Code. Codex has a free tier with limited access and an $8 a month Go plan. You can try Codex before you spend $20.

Difference 3: the sandbox. Codex runs in an OS-enforced sandbox by default. Network off, file writes limited to your workspace. Claude Code uses a permission-prompt system. It asks you before each Bash command and file edit. No kernel-level isolation unless you opt in.

We run both. Claude Code for deep multi-file work and long sessions. Codex for bulk edits and cost-sensitive tasks. Neither is universally better.
