Tignanello with Piero Antinori part.1 #036

Marchese Piero Antinori (born July 16, 1938 in the Palazzo Antinori in Florence) is an Italian wine entrepreneur. He is President of the global family business Marchesi Antinori Srl. Marchese Piero Antinori created in 1971 with the top wine Tignanello the first supertuscan and thus renewed the Italian top viticulture from scratch.
The Italian noble family Antinori in Tuscany has been dedicated to viticulture for 26 generations and is one of the largest and most important wine producers and trading companies in Italy. Founder was Giovanni di Piero Antinori in 1385. He came from a Florentine merchant family with a long winemaking tradition. Giovanni became successful, and wine production, along with the silk trade and international banking business, took an important position in the family’s activities.
In the early 1970s, the Marchesi Antinori experimented in the core zone of Chianti with the classic Chianti grape Sangiovese and renounced for the first time on the then prescribed for the Chianti Classico white wine. Since this did not correspond to the (DOC) production rules for the Chianti Classico, the very high-quality wine could only be offered as Vino da Tavola, in the lowest quality level.
The success was still sensational, especially since the Marchesi also use barriques, which was then completely unknown in Italy. From 1975, French grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were integrated into the cuvée (80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc).
The Tignanello was, together with the Sassicaia, the starting signal for the modernization of Italian viticulture in Tuscany and has found numerous imitators. Antinori still opposes the regulations of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico with the Tignanello (and other top wines) and deliberately markets the Tignanello as the wine of the Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT), outside the classification of the Chianti Classico DOCG (November 7. 2011).
