MEENAKSHI SHEDDE is a film programmer, curator and journalist and specialises in films coming out of South Asia – and is also interested in films made by those of South Asian heritage living in the West.
In this interview shot right at the start of the Cannes Film Festival 2023 and about her jury duties on the Semaine de la Critique (International Critics' Week), she talks about her role, walking the red carpet* on the opening night (May 16), the position of India as a filmmaking country of prominence and her interest in films such as British writer-director's Nida Manzoor’s ‘Polite Society’. Shedde has programmed the South Asian section of films at the Berlinale (Berlin International Film Festival) for more than 25 years and has been recently appointed as senior programme advisor South Asia to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) which runs from September 7-17 2023.
The other members on the jury on International Critics' Week were Jury President French filmmaker Audrey Diwan; Rui Poças, Portuguese director of photography; German actor, choreographer and dancer, Franz Rogowski; and Sundance Film Festival programmer Kim Yutani.
