#10. Lau Cho Kun. Net Worth: $2.3B

Lau Cho Kun is the largest shareholder in Hap Seng Consolidated, through holding company Gek Poh and investment arm Lei Shing Hong. The diversified firm has interests in real estate, plantations, credit financing, automotive, fertilizers trading and building material.

Its plantation division is the largest producer of palm oil in Sabah, East Malaysia. Hap Seng Consolidated has been operating Mercedes-Benz dealerships in Malaysia since 1969. Privately held Hong Kong-based Lei Shing Hong runs Mercedes-Benz dealerships in Asia and Europe and is considering a relisting.

#9. Kuan Kam Hon & family. Net Woth: $2.8B

Kuan Kam Hon was a high school drop-out who began his career in building and construction in 1969. He worked at his father's company building high-end homes around Kuala Lumpur.

He set off on his own in 1978 and started Timol Weaving, a manufacturing business that made woven labels and badges. Founded in 1981, Hartalega Holdings is the world's largest and fastest maker of nitrile gloves, which it exports to 40 countries. He is now a mentor and spokesman, leaving operations to his two sons. He shares his wealth with his brother Kuan Kam Peng.

#8. Koon Poh Keong, Poh Ming & Poh Weng. Net Worth: $3B

Koon Poh Keong, Poh Ming and Poh Weng started Press Metal with two other brothers in the mid-1980s. The brothers pooled $50,000 to start the aluminum-extruding company at a time when Malaysia was in a recession.

Today Press Metal is Southeast Asia's largest integrated aluminum producer and competes with Rio Tinto, Russia's RUSAL and the Aluminum Corp of China. Poh Keong is group chief executive while Poh Ming is executive vice chairman and Poh Weng is executive director. Poh Ming and Poh Keong, the two biggest shareholders, made the list of Malaysia's richest for the first time in 2017. Poh Weng joined them in 2019.

#7. Lim Kok Thay. Net Worth: $3.2B

As Genting chairman, Lim Kok Thay has fast expanded the group's global footprint in the gaming sector. Resorts World Las Vegas is next. Plans for a theme park at Resorts World Genting, which collapsed in 2018 after a fallout with 20th Century Fox, revived after both agreed to settle.

In 2018 Lim opened Resorts World Catskills, but the $1.2 billion casino-and-entertainment complex has struggled to lure visitors to upstate New York. In late 2019, Lim bought out Empire Resorts, the parent company of loss-making Resorts World Catskills. A long-drawn family feud over the empire's wealth and businesses, which include a palm-oil unit, was also finally resolved in early 2020.
