DIY Wooden Train Table (IKEA HACK)

This video covers the process of my wooden train table build.

I made a wooden train table for my kids and I wanted to make a “Do It Yourself” video covering the process that I went through. I wish I could take credit for the idea, but these things are all over the internet.

I had a 3 year old boy at the time that was obsessed with all things trains and loved to play with his wooden Thomas train sets. They were always all over the floor and we were always having to get on the floor with him. We had a small wooden train table, but it was a total piece of junk and it wasn’t cheap. I knew there had to be a better way to play with him and my daughter. While we are using this as a train table, the concept would be the same if you wanted to use it for legos or any other small toys.

The tools I used for the build were the following

Measuring tape
Cordless drill
3/32 drill bit for pilot holes
Philips screw head for drill
1½ inch length screws with an ⅛ inch diameter (box of 100)
Sliding clamps (4 each)
Orbital sander
60, 100, 220, and 400 grit sandpaper
Paints for the top of the table (your choice)
Paint roller and roller pan
Detail paint brushes
I started with a shopping trip to the local Ikea to pick up what I used as the base; two Ikea Trofast frames in the pine finish. They run about $59 USD a piece.

On top of that, I purchased 4 each X medium sized orange storage bins at $4

All totaled, this portion of the build cost us about $162 USD. That might sounds like a lot, but trust me, the closest thing you can buy will be much smaller, constructed of MUCH cheaper material, and cost about twice as much.
