When it comes to geopolitics and major global issues, people sometimes fail to see the woods for the trees. China-U.S. relations are a case in point. But behind the headlines, many Americans – perhaps more than we imagine – are helping to rekindle and foster China-U.S. friendship locally and at the grassroots level. This edition of the Hub looks at two specific examples linking past and present, nature and culture, humans and animals. CGTN's Wang Guan first talks to Elyn MacInnis, a member of the Kuliang Friends, and to Lin Yinan, an expert in Kuliang culture at the East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), to discuss the enduring legacy of the quaint summer resort of Kuliang, near Fuzhou in Fujian Province, where foreigners used to gather in the 19th and 20th century. With Kuliang, Wang Guan delves deep into cherished memories of friendship and trust. But the present is also the bearer of hope, as epitomized by James Ayala's incredible story from New York to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China's Sichuan Province. He has spent more than a decade as an animal behavior researcher, looking after panda cubs and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere of Sichuan's capital city. Ayala tells Wang Guan that he feels like he belongs to a family of like-minded individuals. And his passion serves a purpose, the panda being "the talking point for global issues." Regarding the question of how to square the circle of China-U.S. ties, these experiences speak volumes!
