MY JOURNEY TO EARLY RETIREMENT WITH LUPUS
MY JOURNEY TO EARLY RETIREMENT WITH LUPUS | Why I Retired at 53
In this deeply personal video, I share my journey to early retirement and how a diagnosis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) changed the course of my life.
After more than 30 years working as a registered nurse, I was diagnosed with lupus in my late 40s. As a healthcare professional, I understood the realities of living with a chronic autoimmune disease, and that diagnosis forced me to rethink my future, my priorities, and how I wanted to spend the years ahead.
I made the difficult decision to pursue early retirement at age 53. Along the way, my husband and I closed our business, sold our rental property, and made financial sacrifices to gain something I valued more than a larger paycheck—time.
Time for my health.
Time for my family.
Time to enjoy life on my own terms.
I also share our experience moving to the Philippines after retirement, why we ultimately decided to return to the United States, and the important lessons I learned about healthcare, flexibility, and adapting retirement plans when life doesn’t go exactly as expected.
In this video, I discuss:
• Living with lupus and managing a chronic illness
• Why I chose early retirement at age 53
• Financial decisions that helped make retirement possible
• Closing a business and selling a rental property
• Moving to the Philippines and returning to the U.S.
• The importance of healthcare in retirement
• Why retirement is about more than money
• Lessons learned about health, freedom, and quality of life
If you’re considering early retirement, living with a chronic illness, or simply trying to create a life that aligns with your values, I hope my story offers encouragement and insight.
Thank you for watching. If you enjoy content about retirement, expat life, financial planning, and living with lupus, please like, subscribe, and join me on this journey.
