My Powermatic 180 Planer – Origin Story and Changing the Cutterhead

This is my Powermatic 180 planer that I got at the first live auction I ever went to. I had not planned on buying this planer. I had not even looked at it or inspected it. When it was on the auction block, it looked like it was going to sell for $400 which seemed like a really good price. I put my number up and figured someone else would bid higher than me, but I ended up getting it for $450. It has an 18 inch capacity and a 7.5 horsepower motor. The planer has been working well for the last 6 or 7 years. It came with a Powermatic quiet head cutter head, which they made in the 1980s. This cutter head works well but it has 27 small blades that are hard to sharpen and I would sometimes get ridges down the length of the wood that I planed on it. I wanted to change the quiet head cutterhead out for a standard straight knife cutter head. I managed to find an old straight knife cutter head and I swapped the old quiet head cutter head for the new old straight knife cutter head. The planer seems to be working better than ever.
