Alkyl Halides Part I || Organic Chemistry for Class 12 || Dawn Virtual Academy
“Alkyl Halides Part-I" by Dawn Virtual Academy is an online lecture on Organic Chemistry for Class 12. It discuses the following areas in the field of organic chemistry:
Haloalkanes
“The compounds in which one or more halogen atoms are attached to carbon atoms are called haloalkane”. Haloalkanes are also called organohalogen compounds or halogenoalkanes.
Classification of Haloalkane
Mono Haloalkane/ Alkyl Halides
“The haloalkane which contain one halogen atom is called mono haloalkane or alkyl halides”.
Dihaloalkane
“The haloalkane which contain two halogen atoms is called dihaloalkane”.
Types of Dihaloalkane
a. Vicinal Dihalides
b. Geminal Dihalides
Vicinal Dihalides
“The dihaloalkane in which the two halogen atoms are attached to adjacent carbon atoms are called vicinal (vic-) Dihalides”.
Geminal Dihalides
“The dihaloalkane in which the two halogen atoms are attached to same carbon atom is called geminal (gem-) Dihalides”.
Trihaloalkanes
“The haloalkane which contain three halogen atoms is called Trihaloalkane”.
Tetrahaloalkanes
“The haloalkane which contain four halogen atoms is called Tetrahaloalkane”.
Polyhaloalkanes
“The haloalkane which contain many halogen atoms is called polyhaloalkane”.
Classification of Alkyl halides
I. Primary Alkyl Halides
II. Secondary Alkyl Halides
III. Tertiary Alkyl Halides
Primary Alkyl Halides
“The alkyl halides in which halogen atom is directly attached to primary carbon is called Primary alkyl halides”.
Secondary Alkyl Halides
“The alkyl halides in which halogen atom is directly attached to secondary carbon is called Secondary alkyl halides”.
Tertiary Alkyl Halides
“The alkyl halides in which halogen atom is directly attached to tertiary carbon is called Tertiary alkyl halides”.
