"My Papa Doesn't Two-Time No Time" - played by Fletcher Henderson and his Orchestra
My Papa Doesn’t Two-Time No Time
(Walter Donaldson)
Played by
Fletcher Henderson and his Orchestra
Columbia 126-D
(78 rpm record)
According to Brian Rust (Jazz Discography, 6th edition), the following personnel are present:
Fletcher Henderson (piano, arranger, director); Elmer Chambers, Howard Scott (cornets); Teddy Nixon (trombone); Don Redman (clarinet, alto saxophone, and scat singing vocal); Charlie Dixon (banjo); Ralph Escudero (brass bass); Kaiser Marshall (drums). Recorded in New York, April 16, 1924.
I stand to be corrected, but I believe that this is the first recorded example of scat singing (by Don Redman) in a jazz record. Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scat_singing ) says that it was Louis Armstrong’s 1926 recording of “Heebie Jeebies,” but that is obviously not correct.
