About the Talk:
This conversation will tackle the founding myth of Pakistan Studies: that Muhammad bin Qasim was the first citizen of Pakistan. Drawing on his first book, “A Book of Conquest (Harvard University Press, 2016),” Manan Ahmed will be in conversation with S. Akbar Zaidi on the intellectual history of Muslims in the 20th century, the role of nationalism in history writing and how we need to free our history from colonial shackles.

Manan Ahmed:
Manan Ahmed is a historian of South Asia and the littoral western Indian Ocean world from 1000-1800 CE. He holds a BA in Physics from Punjab University and a PhD from University of Chicago. He is the author of Where the Wild Frontiers Are: Pakistan and the American Imagination (2011), A Book of Conquest: The Chachnama and Muslim Origins in South Asia (Harvard University Press, 2016) and the forthcoming The Loss of Hindustan: Tarikh-i Firishta and the Work of History (2020). He is the founder of the blog, Chapati Mystery and teaches in the History department at Columbia University.

S. Akbar Zaidi:
Professor Dr S Akbar Zaidi is a Political Economist who has been a Professor at Columbia University, New York, since 2010, where he teaches one semester a year. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the IBA, Karachi, teaching one semester each year since 2011. He has written numerous books, including Issues in Pakistan’s Economy: A Political Economy Perspective published by Oxford University Press in 2015. His most recent book is a co-edited volume entitled New Perspectives on Pakistan's Political Economy: State, Class and Social Change, published by Cambridge University Press in April 2019.
