EVGA GTX 1060 3GB - Unboxing, Installation and Overview

With the arrival of the new GPUs I finally decided that it is the right time to upgrade my 5 year old but still working GTX 560Ti from MSI. It served me well, but it was getting loud and hungry after my switch to dual monitor setup.

I'm not a gamer so I wasn't willing to shell a ton of money for a new GPU. I wanted something new so it will last for some time and something silent, because there is nothing worse than a loud GPU in your quiet setup when you are just browsing the internet (looking at you GTX 560!).

Since I am not Nvidia nor AMD fanboy, I was looking at what both companies can offer but in the end I chose the GTX 1060 because it seemed that it runs cooler than the AMDs, meaning less noise.

For some time it was almost impossible to buy any GTX 1060s, so when I finally stumbled upon some in stock I snatched mine immediately. There was no brand loyalty or extensive research. It all came down to a good price and the card being in stock. Looking at it now, I would have probably bought the Gainward version just because of the bigger heatsink, but it wasn't in stock.

I was kind of surprised by the small size of the heatsink on the EVGA GTX 1060 3GB card, but so far it hasn't been a problem, although the GPU runs bit hotter - 65°C at idle - than most of the big boys. At this temperature the fan runs at 16 % fan speed (around 380 rpm) and is practically silent. Rising the fan speed to 30% (730 rpm) brigns the temps to 52°C and the noise levels are still in the area of "silent" in my Fractal Design Define R5 case.

In general, the EVGA GTX 1060 3GB is set up from the factory to run hotter but more quiet. The little heatsink does't leave a lot of overhead for overclocking, so if you are planning to do that maybe look for something with more metal on it.
