Valhalla Rising: a boring film about men staring at stuff

This is a film of the men (and boy) in Valhalla Rising… staring at stuff. I got insanely bored making the cuts, so I've only done half the film, but it's enough.

For some reason, I haven’t included shots of men sleeping. Also generously to the film, I haven't included them silently doing anything else – walking, eating, drinking, praying etc.

This cut doesn’t include silent shots of the scenery/rocks/water/etc, unless the scenery is the thing that the men are staring at.

And it doesn’t include the shots of men staring while you can hear dialogue (except in one instance of repeated dialogue), nor the lengthy pauses of men staring at each other in between lines.

What I’m getting at is that I’ve cut out at least 2/3 of the silent, boring, “atmospheric” action shots, and 100% of the action, be it lifting a pebble, or hitting someone with an axe.

This is easily the most boring film that has ever become a cult classic. The film is sometimes beautiful, always surreal, primeval, brutal, thoughtful (men staring for long times thinking), masculine… but just because you can put labels on it doesn’t make it good.

You want a movie full of long, slow shots of silent men? Then this is for you.
