The compact disc has arrived, heralding a "new era of hi-fi". The new audio format is capable of delivering crystal clear audio, and its laser technology allows listeners to skip instantaneously between songs. Manufacturers also boast that the format is significantly more durable than both vinyl records and cassette tapes - owing to the thin plastic coating that envelopes every CD - but can it pass the Breakfast Time test?

Yes, this infamous report suggests that a CD smeared with honey and rinsed off with hot coffee will work perfectly. BBC Archive has always been extremely doubtful about this, but we have never had the nerve to try it - CD's aren't cheap, you know! We suggest you don't either, at the very least it's a waste of perfectly good coffee and honey...

Incidentally, while many people of a certain age vividly remember seeing this unusual demonstration on TV, they almost always mistakenly remember seeing it on Tomorrow's World. So to all the people who ruined a CD attempting this, please don't hold a grudge against Tomorrow's World presenters - your beef is not with them.
