DON'T Install Air Bags On Your Sprinter Van Before You Watch This...
#VanLife #RVLife #SprinterLife
We installed air suspension on our 2018 Mercedes Sprinter Van 170 4x4 shortly after we bought th van to anticipate a build that will make the van heavier. Having had air bags in other trucks and vans in the past made me feel good about the decision. However this being the first unibody van we have ever owned, we did not know what would happen to the chassis just a couple of years later. This is how we discovered cracks in our frame rails in the van and the steps we took to remedy the problem while we were traveling internationally in Europe.
FYI, while we were using SuperSpring's SumoSprings air suspension, this type of damage to a Sprinter van is possible with any type of air suspension system that uses the frame rail to support the extra load. SuperSprings is not liable for the damages and we attribute it to the rough roads, extra spacers, extra weight and minimal frame support as the cause of the problem. The air suspension is not a way to up-rate your Sprinter's load capacity but rather a way to support temporary loads. If permanent loads like a DIY camper build is expected, we recommend installing extra leaf springs in addition to air bags. That's why we are keeping our SumoSprings on the van for this exact purpose.
