DIY Hamster Wheelbase

In this video I show how I made a wheel base for my dwarf hamsters. My local pet shop doesn’t sell a base for their wheels so I had to come up with a solution to make these wheels freestanding like other commercial wheels do.

If you intend to recreate this wheelbase for your hamster, do not use MDF as a base material. At the time of filming this, I used MDF board scraps from a home renovation project and later realized this wasn’t a good idea. MDF is not a safe material to use in hamster cages because it is considered carcinogenic from the urea-formaldehyde contained in its adhesive fibre. Even though my dwarf hamsters aren’t destructive chewers and the pieces used were sealed with paint, I won’t be leaving things to chance. I will soon be replacing the base with either Melamine or untreated pine wood.

Other alternative wood materials for this projection include: Birch, Aspen or Oak.
