In the IELTS exam, band scores range from 0 to 9, with each band representing a different level of English proficiency. Your overall band score is an average of your scores in the four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each section has its own set of evaluation criteria, which we'll explore in detail.

Listening and Reading Sections
The Listening and Reading sections are scored purely based on the number of correct answers. Each correct answer earns you one mark, and your total score out of 40 is converted to the IELTS 9-band scale. Here’s a breakdown of the band score conversions:

Band 9: 39-40 correct answers
Band 8: 35-38 correct answers
Band 7: 30-34 correct answers
Band 6: 23-29 correct answers
Band 5: 16-22 correct answers
Band 4: 10-15 correct answers
Band 3: 6-9 correct answers
Band 2: 3-5 correct answers
Band 1: 1-2 correct answers
Writing Section
The Writing section is assessed using four criteria:

Task Achievement (Task 1) / Task Response (Task 2):

Task Achievement (for Task 1): This evaluates how well you address all parts of the task. For example, in an Academic Task 1, you should cover all the key features of the graph, chart, or diagram. In General Training Task 1, you need to cover all the points mentioned in the prompt.
Task Response (for Task 2): This assesses how well you respond to the prompt, including developing your ideas fully and addressing all parts of the question.
Coherence and Cohesion:

Coherence refers to the logical organization of ideas. Your writing should flow logically from one point to the next.
Cohesion refers to the use of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource:

This measures your vocabulary range and accuracy. Using a variety of words and expressions correctly can boost your score. Avoid repetition and aim to use precise language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy:

This assesses the range and accuracy of your grammar. Proper use of tenses, sentence structures, and punctuation is crucial. Aim to use a mix of simple and complex sentences accurately.
Writing Band Descriptors:

Band 9: Fully addresses all parts of the task, presents a fully developed position in answer to the question with relevant, fully extended, and well-supported ideas.
Band 8: Covers all requirements of the task, presents a well-developed response to the question with relevant, extended, and supported ideas.
Band 7: Addresses all parts of the task, presents a clear position throughout the response, with main ideas that are relevant and developed.
Band 6: Addresses all parts of the task, but some parts may be more fully covered than others, presents a relevant position although the conclusions may become unclear or repetitive.
Speaking Section
The Speaking section is assessed using four criteria:

Fluency and Coherence:

Fluency refers to your ability to speak smoothly without too many pauses or hesitations.
Coherence refers to how logically you organize your speech. Use linking words to connect your ideas and ensure your response is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource:

This measures your vocabulary range and accuracy. Aim to use a variety of words and expressions correctly. Show your ability to paraphrase and use idiomatic language where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy:

This assesses the range and accuracy of your grammar. Use a variety of sentence structures, including simple, compound, and complex sentences, accurately.
Pronunciation:

This looks at how clearly you pronounce words and your ability to use intonation and stress correctly. While having an accent is not penalized, clear and understandable speech is essential.
Speaking Band Descriptors:

Band 9: Speaks fluently with only rare repetition or self-correction; any hesitation is content-related rather than to find words or grammar. Uses a full range of structures naturally and appropriately.
Band 8: Speaks fluently with only occasional repetition or self-correction; hesitation is usually content-related and only rarely to search for language. Uses a wide range of structures flexibly.
Band 7: Speaks at length without noticeable effort or loss of coherence; may demonstrate language-related hesitation at times or some repetition and/or self-correction. Uses a range of complex structures with some flexibility.
