Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (a Great Azerbaijani Chess Player): Rating, Personal Life, Career, Game Style
Shakhriyar Mamedyarov is an Azerbaijani chess player, international grandmaster. As of June 2024, he is Azerbaijan's highest rated chess player.
He’s the only male chess player in history who became the world champion among juniors under 20 more than once (2003, 2005). He was the world champion among juniors under 18 (2003) and was World Rapid Champion in 2013.
He’s a gold medalist at the 2012 Chess Olympiad on the third board. He’s three-time European champion (2009, 2013, 2017) of the team championship as part of the Azerbaijani national team.
He’s also a two-time winner at Tal Memorial and Shamkir Chess, as well as the winner of 2018 Biel Chess Festival where he beat the reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen.
Mamedyarov has competed in the Candidates Tournament in 2011 (eliminated in quarterfinals), in 2014 (placing fourth) and in 2018 (placing second). He is the winner of many international tournaments.

Rating
In May 2017, he became the 13th chess player in world chess history to surpass 2800 Elo rating score. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov has also gone down in history as the first Muslim chess player to achieve this feat.
In February 2018, Mamedyarov was ranked second in the FIDE rankings.
His highest live rating was 2826.2 on September 30, 2018. With this result, he became the 6th strongest chess player in the history of chess.

Shakhriyar was born on April 12, 1985 in Sumgayit, Azerbaijan. He has two sons named Raul and Hamid.

Career
In 2008, Mamedyarov defeated Magnus Carlsen for the first time in a game with classical time control at the FIDE Grand Prix tournament in Baku.
Mamedyarov shared fourth place with Alexander Grischuk, half a point behind Wang Yu, Magnus Carlsen and Vugar Hashimov, but defeated the future world champion in a personal match.
He was a member of the Azerbaijani national team, which played against the world team in Baku on May 7-9, 2009, as part of the “Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev Cup”.
In 2012 in Eilat and in 2014 (in Bilbao) he won the European Clubs Cup as part of the Azerbaijani club SOCAR Azerbaijan, and in 2017 (in Antalya) as part of the Russian Globus.
10 years after his first victory in 2018, at the international tournament in Biel, Switzerland, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov defeated Magnus Carlsen, securing first place in the tournament with a round left in the competition.
Mamedyarov scored 7.5 out of 10 possible points, one and a half points ahead of the world champion.
In 2019, he defeated the Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and became the winner of the second stage of the _Grand Prix series of the International Chess Federation.
In July 2021, taking part at the Grand Chess Tour tournament in Zagreb, Croatia, he won a blitz game against former world champion Garry Kasparov on the seventh move.
In 2021, Mamedyarov took first place at the tournament in Bucharest - one of the first since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic - one point ahead of So, Aronian and Grischuk.
At the beginning of 2022, he shared second place with Richard Rapport at the Wijk aan Zee tournament, one and a half points behind Carlsen.
