Lake District Walks: Dodd - hill of the Osprey

A wonderful walk through Dodd Wood, and up Dodd Fell, close to Keswick in the English Lake District. The fell is famous as the breeding place for ospreys, but that is not why I love it. When Alfred Wainwright included it in his guide to the Northern Fells, it was very much Dodd Wood, as the view from the top was severely restricted by the trees. Not any more! The Forestry Commission have cleared the top of Dodd Fell, and the views are simply glorious. It is a fabulous and very easy walk, suitable for everyone, and although the first mile is along the forest trail of Dodd Wood, but it is not unpleasant. Once beyond the trees, the views open up, and include a stunning view of Derwentwater, the whole of Bassenthwaite Lake, and a scenic panorama of the Lake District Fells. They are as good as from any fell in the Lake District. Enjoy.
