Can you install a 410a condensing unit on a r22 system
Update: I welcome all comments including those that disagree. Comments that are degrading or foul language will be deleted.
There is more than enough evidence to support the fact that it will work equally as well as the former r22 unit. Moreover, we have 410a units that we installed as far back as 2011 that are still running perfectly.
What is in 410a?
The chemical compassion of r410a includes those same chemicals in R22. It also has 134a and other variables.
Mineral Oil
A while back and with little notice or fan fair, R22 system changed from POE oil to Mineral Oil. Now I can's say how far back but I will find out and report back.
Do you know what happens when you mix POE and Mineral Oil?
Nothing! They do not mix. They do not contaminate each other. They do not sludge. They also have similar temperature and friction tolerances to spite their viscus differences.
To illustrate the point of mixing oils is perfectly fine, you can research the following. The manufactures of a R22 replacement compressors that can be used with 407c require both oils to be used in 90/10 to 80/20. You read that right. Look up "converting compressor to 407c"
Certainly, if you can swing the cost of 6000 to 9000 you will get your money's worth when buying a complete system. Otherwise the 2500 to 4000 for a condenser only install is a viable long term solution to restoring cool air to your home.
Though we have been doing it for over 8 years there are still those that do not believe that you can install a new 410 condenser on a r22 system.
There are a number of required steps to make the 410a work on the existing and typically smaller coil but it always works and in most cases it does a fantastic job of cooling your home.
Installing a condenser only is a cost saving measure. It is not going to get you the efficiency the new condensers are designed for.
If your HVAC contractor does not offer this as a solution keep searching. I have spoke to many HVAC contractors from across the USA that gladly offer this as a solution. There is no effect on the warranty for any of the brands we install.
Update: We now offer a 10-year labor warranty for those customers that renew their ACM service membership. Contact us for details.
