Renaissance Discoveries: The Etruscans
This video takes a look at an ancient culture that intrigued the Florentines of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries—that of the Etruscans. Many Florentines regarded this ancient people, who flourished artistically and politically before the founding of the Roman Republic, as their ancestors. These Florentines were not alone. A number of art historians have come to regard the vibrant and creative culture of Renaissance Florence as a continuation of the civilisation of the Etruscans. Artists such as Donatello, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo appear to have taken inspiration from Etruscan art while rulers such as Cosimo I de’ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, bolstered his claim to power by pointing to illustrious Etruscan precedents.
