Aadi Perukku also called Padinettam perukku is celebrated on 18th day of the Tamil calendar month of Aadi (mid-July to mid-August). This festival is observed as a water ritual celebrated by women in Tamil Nadu to honor nature.
Aadi Perukku is dedicated to the perennial river basins of Tamil Nadu and major lakes water source areas and is intended to celebrate the water rising levels due to the onset of monsoon. The south west monsoon brings rain which fills the water catchment areas and the rivers are gushing with water. The farmers eagerly look to this for sowing seeds and planting their fields.
This is expected to occur invariably on the 18th day of the solar month, Aadi corresponding to 2 or 3 August every year. To bless mankind with peace, prosperity and happiness, nature is worship in the form of (Divine Mother) Amman deities are organized to shower nature’s bountiful grace on human beings.
Here I have shown how Adi Perukku is celebrated in my hometown of Nagercoil, Tamilnadu, India.
