Hanging a Sun Shade With Homemade Posts!

Our backyard is very open and sunny. It can get very hot on summer days. So my wife came home with a sun shade and we only have one tree to anchor it from. So I had to create a solution using 3/4 inch pvc pipe, caps, and some full length thread hex bolts. The pvc pipes were cut to 8 foot lengths. This was a fun, easy project that can be done with minimal tools. Really just a hand saw and drill. You can do it! And keep reading to avoid two of my mistakes.

If you are interested in a shade sail like this or you could use another one, try clicking the link after this note. I have several of these shades by Coolaroo and they work like a charm. And ultimately, the hanging system supported two shades with no problem. I will be doing four shades with it this summer.

Also, I like trying to figure out new things. One viewer suggested that I could have done this with adjustable tent poles. Honestly, I am not really a camper so that idea never occurred to me. Here are a couple of options that will help you get your shade up without spending a lot of time in the shop. Also, they will be easier to transport.

Weanas Adjustable Tarp Poles Set of 2 Telescoping Aluminum Rods for Tent Fly and Tarps, Lightweight Replacement Tent Poles for Camping, Backpacking, Hiking. They are highly rated and look like a great option.

This option uses sections that clip together. Also highly rated and a little more budget friendly.

FAIL! This idea was awesome until I discovered the pvc was too flexible.

SUCCESS! I inserted two 4' lengths of 3/4" dowel (the second one trimmed slightly) into the pipe and gained the needed rigidity.

HINT! Bring a hand saw with you to wherever you are buying the pvc. I wanted to make two more posts, but I had to stop along the way home and didn't want to leave them sticking out of the back of my truck. Had to bend them. Well, after being forced into a bent position on a hot day, they stay bent. Cut them to length before you leave them in a hot vehicle.

HINT 2! Be sure to pull anchor lines out at a 45 degree angle away from the shade. That way the shade gets support in two directions. You will be surprised at how solid it stands!

Please use caution when using any tools. They can cause severe injury or even death. Also, the projects you see me working on are simply that. Projects I am working on. I am not a professional and make no guarantees your work, or my work for that matter, will turn out right. Safety first and when in doubt, call a professional.
