Bresnick's "Bird as Prophet"
“There is no art form so deeply stirring to so many people as music,” faculty composer Martin Bresnick recently said. “When we play together, when we listen together, together we form an ideal community.”
Our Feb. 6 New Music New Haven concert featured a performance by violinist Elly Toyoda ’16MM and pianist Lisa Moore of Bresnick’s “Bird as Prophet.”
“When I hear my own composition ‘Bird as Prophet’ reimagined by such extraordinary musicians as Elly Toyoda and Lisa Moore, as I did on that concert on February 6, 2020, I am connected imaginatively with the distinctively human implications of the passage of time carefully elaborated by their poised and impassioned performance,” Bresnick said. “Birds have always been prophets for humanity. From the canary in the coal mine to the owl of Minerva, they tell us of our fate in their own way. Schumann heard them. I listen with concern.”
Thanks, Prof. Bresnick.
