After a scandal, John Singer Sargent packed up and moved to England where he began working on his next piece, Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose. With this new piece, Sargent aimed to do something he had never done before: capture the fleeting beauty of twilight, the Impressionist way. That meant painting en plein air for as long as the light lasted, which was only about two minutes a day!
