Francisco Mignone (1897-1987) was a distinguished Brazilian composer and conduc-tor. His 16 Valsas are one of the most extensive works in the literature for solo bas-soon. The pieces are in the form of Seresteiras. These are poignant melodies somewhat in the style of the Portuguese Fado. Each piece is a poem with a clearly defined idea and content. Mignone said, "The interpreter must imagine words for each phrase that is played." Given both the prevalence of the guitar in Brazilian music and the fact that Mignone wrote many fine works for the instrument, it did not seem a liberty to expand these works with a guitar
