Aftermarket A/C issues on a classic car

The common methods for fixing misaligned pulleys on an aftermarket air conditioning system for a 1957 Ford Thunderbird with a Y-block engine often involve adjusting or replacing the mounting hardware.

Methods to Correct Pulley Alignment
Shimming the Compressor Bracket: A primary method is to use shims (flat washers or metal spacers) between the AC compressor mounting bracket and the engine block. Adding shims behind the bracket moves the compressor and its pulley outward from the engine, while shimming between the compressor and the bracket can move it inward. You'll need to use a straightedge to determine the precise distance needed.

Modifying/Replacing the Bracket: If the misalignment is significant, the issue may be a poorly designed or incorrect AC compressor bracket for your application (often due to the aftermarket nature of the components). Solutions include:

Slightly bending or prying the existing bracket to correct the angle, though this must be done carefully to avoid damage.

Enlarging the mounting holes on the bracket to allow for greater lateral adjustment before tightening the bolts.

Purchasing a model-specific bracket kit designed for the '55-'57 Thunderbird Y-block that is engineered for modern Sanden-style compressors and proper belt alignment, sometimes even including an offset alternator pulley to help with alignment on a generator-to-alternator conversion.

Checking Other Pulleys: In some cases, the misalignment is not with the AC pulley, but with another pulley in the system (like the crankshaft or water pump pulley). Ensure all other pulleys are correctly seated and have the correct offset for the intended accessory configuration. Sometimes, a spacer for a water pump pulley is necessary.

The goal is to ensure the entire belt face is aligned between the crankshaft pulley, the AC compressor pulley, and any other relevant pulleys (like the water pump or idler pulley). Misalignment causes premature belt wear and can lead to the belt jumping off or squealing.
