Reflection: What Do We Lose When We Lose the Church?
For a long time, I avoided passing judgment. I wanted to hear more voices — from different Armenian communities across the world. But today brought clarity.
I realized that what kept Armenians united wasn’t just land, blood, or language. It was the Church — an institution that held us together.
A baptized Armenian from Montana or Marseille could come forward with a certificate and be recognized as one of us.
Not because of DNA. But because the Church preserved our code, our name, our belonging.
The Church is not just about religion. It’s about identity. About having a key that opens the door to being Armenian, wherever you are.
Without the Church, how would you prove you’re Armenian?
One expert said it best: Without the Church, Armenians might have fully assimilated into other nations.
The alphabet, our prayers, our sacred texts — they were all kept alive inside those walls.
That’s why today, I go back to the alphabet. I relearn. I rewrite. In Armenian.
Because to be truly myself, I must remember who I am.
And no, I’m not saying the Church is perfect. I’m not saying every Catholicos or every priest is flawless.
There is much that needs reform — one day. But now is not that day.
We have bigger problems to solve — starting with security.
That’s why I believe that attacks on the Church right now are not just wrong — they are a blow below the belt, even to the idea of the Armenian state itself.
