Mary knew Arthur since they were young. She was madly in love with him, and knew he was a good man doing bad things. She couldn't bear to watch the man she loves get himself killed while she did nothing to stop it. When she couldn't get him to stop his life of crime, her abusive alcoholic dad prevented her from seeing him anymore, and she knew she couldn't run away with him knowing full well he was going to get himself killed. She couldn't enable the man she loved to continue down the path that was going to kill him. So she tried to forget about him, married some schmuck she didn't really love, and it ended up making her more miserable. When her brother was brought into a cult, she had no one to turn to other than the man she tried to forget about so she wouldn't have to watch him die. But when Arthur, being the good man she's always known, still helped her, she started to realize how miserable she was without him. Years of looking after the drunken abusive father she chose to stay with, culminating into her having to ask Arthur for help yet again to stop him from destroying her family was the final straw for her. She no longer cares about what anyone thinks, she no longer cares that this will likely lead to Arthur's death. She's madly in love with him and regretted not running away with him. She's willing to go with Arthur down the path to his death so she can die with him, but Arthur wont let her because Arthur knows that if the bank job in Saint Denis goes wrong, it will be the end of the gang, so he promises her that he will get money and they will go off together. Then the bank job is botched and Arthur is lost for weeks on an island and doesn't make contact with her after promising to do so, and Mary realizes that after failing to rob a big city bank, Arthur's death is inevitable, and she can't even find him to die with him. So she tries to let him go for good, so she's spared the burden of knowing she couldn't stop the man she loved from signing his own death warrant. She even sends him the ring Arthur gave her that she kept even through her marriage to another man, because every time she looks at it, she's reminded of Arthur. And since she read about the bank in the paper, the ring is now a symbol of her failure. She wants to let him go forever, but in the end, she just couldn't do it. She loved him so much and couldn't stop thinking about him. She returns years later, hoping and praying that what she was afraid of didn't come to pass, clearly still madly in love, but instead finds Arthur's grave. She tried her best but couldn't stop it from happening and her discovery is heartbreaking. She couldn't save the only man she truly loved
