Imagine a man of unsound mind bludgeons your mother to death. He never stood trial for his crime and sat behind bars for over 20 years. Then one day you find out that without being convicted he was unconditionally released from prison, to sweeten the deal he is awarded 3.5 million dollars for breach of his constitutional rights and wrongful imprisonment. Now imagine this situation has been repeated several times over the past few years where the government has had to cough up 2.3 million and 5.3 million dollars to settle similar cases. This all stems from the common and less I say accepted practice of dumping suspected lunatics who have run afoul of the law behind bars without due process or as the legal system calls it being sent to prison at her majesty’s pleasure.
