Kirtan Competition of Traditional Rarhi Kirtan

A film by Jyoshna La Trobe - Ecstatic dance, music and chants by praise music or 'kirtan' groups from Rarh, India come together to perform at a traditional competition. Marai kirtan is chanting the name of the Supreme only, in this case Hari's name or Hari bolo bolo. Performing kirtan ragas such as Daspera, they show their expertise in tala with the khol drum patterns and raga through melody. Over fifty groups participated in this competition and the judges were there representing the four corners of Rarh. The village audience also influenced the final decision.
