Active Listening Course (12/23): My job is not to fix - Mindsets
🎓 Full Active Listening Course, Exercises & AI Practice:
https://www.udemy.com/course/active-listening-skill/
My Job Is Not to Fix
One of the most common listening mistakes is trying to fix the speaker too quickly.
When someone shares a problem, many of us naturally want to give advice, offer solutions, or help them solve it immediately.
But in active listening, your first job is not to fix.
Your first job is to understand.
In this lesson, you'll learn why people do not always want solutions right away and how jumping into advice too early can make someone feel dismissed, even when your intention is to help.
You'll learn:
✅ Why people often need to feel heard before they need advice
✅ How the urge to fix can interrupt real listening
✅ Why helpful advice can feel unhelpful when it comes too early
✅ How to recognize whether someone wants support, empathy, or problem-solving
✅ Why presence can sometimes be more helpful than solutions
✅ How to pause before moving into advice-giving mode
Advice is not wrong.
But in active listening, advice should be optional, invited, and secondary.
First, listen.
First, understand.
Then, if the speaker wants help, you can offer it.
🎯 Practice Challenge
In your next conversation, notice your urge to fix, advise, or solve.
Before responding, ask yourself:
"Do I understand the intention of this conversation?"
"Does this person need problem-solving, emotional support, or simply my presence?"
Pause, listen, and respond based on what the speaker truly needs.
Share your experience in the comments.
