Flame and Flammability (Spark) tests of Metal Powders

In this video flame tests are done on many metal powders including Mg, Al, Si, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn,Ga, Sr, Ag, Bi, Pb.

Metal powders are highly flammable, typically, but the burning characteristics depend highly on the size of metal particles and their surface area. This video tests mostly fine metal powders and for the few tests where two different meshes (or particles sizes) were tested side by side they often reacted very differently.

Metal powders are also highly flammable and neigh impossible to extinguish. Water only makes metal fires worse since water is an oxidizer. Using sand to extinguish metal fires by suffocating their oxygen is a good way to extinguish a metal fire.

This experiment has many implications in pyrotechnics since metal powders are very commonly used for fuels and to add sparks to compositions.
