Hitler Ordered Paris Burned to the Ground. His Own General Looked Away | WWII

August 1944. Paris. The Allies were closing in.
Hitler knew he was losing France.
So he gave one final order.
Hitler's orders were to destroy bridges, major buildings, and key facilities across the entire city — rather than let Paris fall into Allied hands undamaged. The National WWII Museum
Explosives were already placed under the Eiffel Tower. Notre Dame. The Seine bridges.
The man assigned to pull the trigger was General Dietrich von Choltitz — known as a soldier who had never once disobeyed an order.
Then on the morning of August 25th — he didn't.
Instead, he surrendered the German garrison to Free French forces, earning him the nickname "Saviour of Paris." Syracuse University Today
"If for this first time I disobeyed," he later said, "it was because I knew Hitler was crazy." The Washington Post
That morning, Hitler raged into his phone with one question —
"Is Paris burning?"
It wasn't.
