A restored 1910 Steinway upright Pianola plays four 1937 fox-trots
This mahogany foot-pumped 1910 Steinway upright piano and pneumatic player, equipped with the Aeolian "Themodist / Metrostyle" pianola action, were completely restored in 2017 at Historic Pianos. Here the instrument's restorer pianolizes a medley roll of four 1937 fox-trots, arranged and played in strict dance rhythym by Robert Farquhar, one of the marketing pseudonyms for prolific roll arranger Frank Milne. The piano roll is Duo-Art recording 01104, and the four songs are (1) "This Never Happened Before" from the 1937 movie "Hitting a New HIgh", music by Jimmy McHugh and lyrics by Harold Adamson, (2) "True Confession" with words and music by Fredrich Hollander and Sam Coslow, (3) "Sweet Someone" from the movie "Love and Hisses", music by Harry Revel and lyrics by Mack Gordon, and (4) "You're A Sweetheart" title song to the 1937 movie, with music by Jimmy McHugh and lyrics by Harold Adamson.
This Themodist, pre-Duo-Art instrument interprets only the bass and treble accent perforations on the roll, ignoring all 8 tracks of Duo-Art loudness perforations. So all loudness is controlled by the human pianolist, rather than automatically rendered as would happen if the same roll were heard on a later Duo-Art reproducing piano, first introduced in 1914.
This foot-pumped player is very easy to pump and very expressive, so it is very fun to pump even these relatively long and meticulously arranged later Duo-Art rolls. Please visit www.historicpianos.com for more information about restoration of such player piano instruments.
