Category 5 Hurricane Iota Passes By San Andres and Providencia, Colombia - Nov. 16, 2020 huracán

For the first time in recorded history, the Colombian islands of San Andres and Providencia are feeling the effects of a Category 5 storm with Hurricane Iota drawing closer to landfall, Colombia President Ivan Duque said Monday.

Iota rapidly strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane and is expected to make landfall in Central America as a "catastrophic" storm Monday night. San Andres and Providencia have been part of Colombia for centuries, but are geographically closer to Central America than to the Colombian mainland.

A hurricane warning is in effect for Providencia, while San Andres is under a hurricane watch, according to a 7 p.m. ET advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

The advisory said the storm will bring "catastrophic winds, life-threatening storm surge, and torrential rainfall" to Central America.

Duque said Monday at least one person is dead on Providencia and 90% of the island's infrastructure has been affected by Iota. The local airport is also unusable because of debris, Duque said.

"It's the first time that a category 5 Hurricane has reached our territory since records began," Duque said during a national press conference from the Colombian capital of Bogota. "We are facing an issue with characteristics never before witnessed by our country."
