W123 HVAC Recirculation Modification (Cheap/Free Colder AC Mods Part 1)
My W123s HVAC system is just a little lacking in this hot July weather. Maybe it worked better in a more temperate climate like in Germany, but in the southern US not so much.
A big reason for this is the recirculation door. From the factory you get at best 80% recirculated air.
That means 20% of your is the hot, humid outside air, and removing humidity is a huge drain on AC systems.
There is a simple, non-destructive way to change this to work as either 100% recirculated, or fresh air without having to have ropes, drilling holes or other methods.
It can be easily undone should you decide you want factory HVAC again.
Key things in video:
0:00 Introduction
0:35 Before: 61 Degree vent temperature (Idling, hot engine, parked in sun)
0:50 Why this happens
2:00 Pull climate control out
3:00 Vacuum control valves
3:44 Unplug #5 electrical connector
4:10 Remove vacuum lines from #4 and #5
4:27 Explanation of how the mod works
4:47 The actual modification (requires vacuum line and a tee fitting)
6:00 How it'll all look, Reassembly
6:30 After: 55F vent temp
7:29 But wait, theres more (videos coming about improving AC)
I just used some stuff I had lying around, but here are some links to what you can use if you don't have spare vacuum line and tees about:
