In 1971, Ford's own engineers caught a fatal flaw in the Pinto's gas tank — and an $11 shield would have stopped it. They shipped it anyway. A leaked internal memo later revealed Ford had run the numbers: paying out lawsuits for burned drivers was cheaper than the recall.

The Grimshaw v. Ford case awarded $125 million in punitive damages. Ford finally recalled 1.5 million Pintos in 1978 — seven years after the first deaths.
