FI-FU

This work was produced thanks to "Land Memory and Folk Song" — a cultural initiative by Saga Prefectural Government, produced by Epigram and Studio The Future.

The short film came about from research into folk songs from Saga Prefecture. The artists stayed in the prefecture for a short period of time and worked with artists associated with Saga Prefecture along with workshop participants. Together they created a new work to revive folk songs in a new form for the modern age.

The folk song that was selected was "Kyaatsuguro," a traditional folk song from the Shiota-cho area of Ureshino. ”Kyatsuguro" is Kyushu dialect for a wild bird called "Kaituburi” - a water bird.

The two artists in residence from the Netherlands were Lavinia Xausa, a filmmaker, and Jasmine Karimova, a composer and performer, who created the music for the film. Hougaku Sannin-musume were the traditional trio that they collaborated with.

Inspired by their surroundings and from local residents, the final product is an introspective exploration of community and ritual, loss and impermanence.

The project aims to convey a universal message, and at the same time, to pass on Saga's almost forgotten folk songs to future generations and to the world.
