How to Play Stride Piano (In the Style of Scott Joplin)
Stride piano is a style that is almost comical these days but is a lot of fun to play! It's also a great workout for your left hand. It's mostly associated with pieces like The Entertainer by Scott Joplin, which was featured in the soundtrack of the 70s movie The Sting. Just look it up, I'm sure you'll recognize it once you hear it. In this video tutorial we will look at how to play stride piano and give some tips on what to do with the left hand and the right hand, so take out your honky-tonk and join the fun!
The name "stride" comes from the motion carried out by your left hand: it alternates between bass and chords, making "strides" between the two amounting to large jumps. This might prove somewhat challenging to beginner players so take it easy, work slowly and with a metronome and build up your chops until you can execute the motion.
