Boston Seniors Dance in Black History Month Flash Mob

Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the Commission on Affairs of the Elderly celebrated their 5th annual Black History Month event on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the Russell Auditorium in Dorchester with more than 600 older Bostonians--the largest turnout in the event’s history.

This year’s theme was “Together We Rise” inspired by Maya Angelou’s poem Still I Rise. Attendees were treated to a surprise intergenerational flash mob with more than 40 people including older adults, Senior Corps. volunteers, Elderly Commission staff, and members of the Boston Police Department. The choreographed routine was set to a compilation of Miriam Makeba’s Mama Africa and John Legend and Common’s Oscar-winning song, Glory.

“It’s about bringing people together from different generations and all walks of life,” said Tyissha Jones-Horner, Administrative Director of Volunteer Programs for the Elderly Commission and coordinator of the flash mob.“This dance shows that we are one, and even through adversity, together we rise.”
