'We need a change' UK public reacts to July 4 election announcement

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called a national election for July 4 on Wednesday (May 22), saying Britons would be able to choose their future in a vote his Conservatives are widely expected to lose to the opposition Labour Party after 14 years in power.

Keir Starmer, the leader of Britain's opposition Labour Party, said on Wednesday (May 22) a national election in July would give the country an opportunity to end the "chaos" of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservative government.

U.K. voters showed mixed reactions as Rishi Sunak set July 4 as the date for a national election that will determine who governs the U.K.

The centre-left Labour Party is strongly favoured to defeat Sunak’s party.

Londoners were ready for the change promised by the upcoming British general election, some said.
