17-May-24: 'Spanish PM rules out supporting Puigdemont's presidency bid'
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has ruled out any chance of the Socialists supporting Carles Puigdemont’s bid for the presidency of Catalonia. Sánchez says last Sunday’s election results show that support for independence is waning, and urged Puigdemont to accept reality. He disregarded the possibility that Junts could withdraw their support in the Spanish congress, and said that all roads lead to Socialist candidate Salvador Illa being named president.
Former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has reaffirmed that the Hermoso kiss after the World Cup final was consensual and accused the player of changing her story. Rubiales faces charges of sexual assault and coercion.
Doubts return over Xavi Hernández's future as manager of FC Barcelona after club president Joan Laporta reportedly lost confidence in him after comments this week about the club's financial situation. Just three weeks ago, Xavi U-turned on his decision to leave at the end of the season to continue for another year.
For the first time in Catalonia, a company has built a 100% electric boat, as part of a plan to promote decarbonization on the seas. The boat will be part of the America's Cup sailing race support team on the water.
Catalan singer Rosalía will build a recording studio in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, just south of Barcelona. The site will be located two streets away from the Fira Gran Via congress hall and the local council considers it will boost the city's Cultural District.
