Bob Wills, The Lost Session from Hollywood, 1945 revised

Two of the songs in this collection were issued on a Harmony LP many years ago. They just added two tracks to the old Bob Wills Roundup album. They used these two takes of Hang Your Head in Shame, and Texas Playboy Rag.

“Hang Your Head in Shame,” was a hit for both Bob Wills at #3 and Red Foley at #4 on the Country Charts in 1945.

Any Bob Wills fan has heard that he became a binge drinker. He could go months and not drink, but one drink and he was gonna get drunk. That’s what happened the night of January 24, 1945. The war is winding up, and Japan will surrender in October this year.

A song like, “Smoke on the Water,” is a morale booster. At the end, referring to the war, Bob says, “I don’t know.” This verson was not released until 2000 by Bear Family. Thank you, Rick Kienzel.

“Bluer Than Blue,” is much better than other songs that were not released. The second version (not included here) was slower, and I think that was a mistake. I love this version, mistakes and all. He calls Cameron Hill a virgin. Oops.

The band featured in this session is Jimmy Wyble, Cameron Hill, and Noel Boggs on guitars. Bob and Joe were on fiddles, Millard Kelso on piano, Teddy Adams on bass, Alex Brashear plays trumpet, and Monte Montjoy is on Drums.

Three of these songs became hits. The fourth was unissued. Notice, “Texas Playboy Rag ,” was an instrumental. The OKEH label was dropped in 1946. “Texas Playboy Rag” and reissues were on the Columbia label. Bob later added words, and it became the New Texas Playboy Rag.

I realize only real buffs will appreciate this material. I want to share it for those that do.
