1972 SPECIAL REPORT: "THE BROOKLYN HOLD UP"

A 19‐year‐old robber who held a woman employee of a Brooklyn check‐cashing agency at gunpoint for more than two hours yesterday morning was shot and killed by the police after he had been lured out by a ruse.

The gunman, had released the terrified woman after a getaway car he demanded was driven up to the agency in Flatbush. A city detective posing as the agency manager was the driver and the concern's director of security, posing as an employe, sat with the nervous robber.

No Money Taken

When the holdup man realized the ruse, after a few blocks, he attempted to escape on foot but was shot down by following policemen.

The gunman was identified from fingerprints as Emmanuel Parker of 22 Mill Street, Brooklyn.

None of the employes of the agency, the Royal Check Cashing Service at 1235 Nostrand Avenue, just south of Winthrop Street, was hurt and no money was taken.

The holdup began minutes after 9 A.M. The gunman waited for two women clerks—Marlene Bernstein and Mrs. Sheila Edelle, both 32—to open the shop on the ground floor of a three‐story brick building near Kings County Hospital. It was the day the biweekly welfare checks are distributed, and was expected to be busy.

The gunman entered the shop and announced, “This is a stickup,” pointing a nickelplated 32‐caliber pistol at the women. Miss Bernstein tripped a silent alarm, which was recorded by the police at 9:07 A.M.

Two patrolmen In a squad car—Frank Vulper, 24, and Dennis Callahan, 23—responded within four minutes to the “10–30,” the police code for a felony in progress.

When the patrolmen walked into the shop, they saw the 6‐foot‐2‐inch gunman behind the counter. “It's a false alarm,” one of the women said. “That's right,” the gunman affirmed.

However, one of the women gestured toward the gunman and the policemen realized it was a holdup. “I didn't shoot because I was afraid of hitting the girls,” Patrolman Vulper said.
