-A more in depth description of each lesson-

LESSON 1: LIP FLAP
Lip flap is one of the most common "rookie moves" I see editors making (myself included!). Sometimes it is really hard to avoid using lip flap, but it should be avoided whenever possible. It just doesn't look as good as clips that don't have lip flap in them. If you can take the time to LIP-SYNC the lip flap to the words of the song (to make it look like the anime character is singing it) then it will look much better, but you must put in the time to actually make the mouth match up with the song lyrics. If you MUST use a clip with lip flap in it because it is just the most perfect clip for that moment then make sure the clip lasts for a very short amount of time. THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THAN A CLIP WITH LIP FLAP THAT LASTS MORE THAN 1 SECOND. NOTHING. Trust me.

LESSON 2: CLIP SPEED
Many AMV editors make the mistake of speeding up clips way too much when the song they're using has a fast beat. To me, this is the clearest sign of an inexperienced editor. In general you should avoid using sped up clips unless you are using it to emphasize a slow-motion (or slowed down) clip immediately following the sped up clip (which is a very cool effect!). The rule: an anime character shouldn't be moving faster than they could in real life otherwise it runs the risk of looking goofy/weird or forced.

LESSON 3: OVERLAYS
Another rookie mistake is to have an overlay almost completely obscure the actual clip underneath. I call the overlay "too heavy" when this happens. It usually happens when an editor puts the overlay above the original clip but doesn't lower the Opacity enough instead of altering the video track properties to accommodate an overlay clip (such as changing the compositing mode of the video track). Here is a link to my tutorial video which will show you the proper way to use overlays: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiRcUOTQWcE

LESSON 4: SUBTITLES
Everyone should already know this rule, honestly, but many new editors simply don't know how to get rid of the subtitles or didn't realize just how bad they look when used in an AMV. The BEST way to deal with them is to remove them using a video converter program (such as FormatFactory), but the EASIEST way would be to simply crop the subtitles out of the picture by either zooming in or adding the black bars at the bottom and top of the screen (or a combination of both).

LESSON 5: GET MORE VIEWS!
Many AMV editors, even some of the more advanced/experienced ones, don't realize how important the Title, Tags, and Thumbnail of their videos are in order to get views. Many editors try to make their video title artsy or cool sounding by using random symbols and lyrics of the song used without realizing no one will type that into the search box when looking for an AMV to watch, thus limiting their view base to subscribers and Youtube suggested videos.
Likewise they don't realize the importance of filling up the Tag box when uploading their AMV. The tag words are what help your video appear closer to the top of the searches that will pop up when someone types something into the Youtube search box. For example, if someone makes a search for "Naruto AMV" and your video has those words (or exact phrase) in the tags then your video is more likely to pop up in that person's search results than a video that does not have those words in the tags. The more tags the better so get tagging and use it to your advantage!
Again, the thumbnail you chose for your video will greatly influence whether people click on your video or not. I've watched some GREAT videos that I was expecting to be horrible because they had a shitty thumbnail, and I almost didn't bother clicking on the video at all because of it. People will assume the video sucks if the thumbnail sucks too, so if you have an eye-grabbing thumbnail that draws viewers attentions' they are WAY more likely to click on the video, trust me.
