ROADSIDE STOP (Part 5 on Vermont Trip). Trinity Churchyard Cemetery, in Holderness, New Hampshire.

Continuing on our grand adventure, on the way back to my home-base in Stowe Vermont from Claude Rains' grave in New Hampshire - here I stop at another arbitrary cemetery at the side of the road.
Next planned back in Stowe, we do continue on to see the magnificent estate and graves of the singing von Trapp family, made famous in the 1965 movie, "The Sound of Music", starring Julie Andrews (next episode).

Trinity Churchyard Cemetery in Holderness, New Hampshire, established in 1797.

Samuel Livermore (1732-1803), a lawyer in Portsmouth and Londonderry, became Attorney General of the Province of New Hampshire in 1769. But, as the American Revolution approached in the winter of 1775, he moved north to his land holdings in the frontier town of Holderness. He quickly became the town’s most prominent citizen and largest landowner. Livermore soon cast his lot with the new government, becoming the state’s Attorney General in 1776, and later serving in the Continental Congress and as Chief Justice of the state. He was a major leader in the movement to ratify the U.S. Constitution, and, served, under that Constitution, as one of New Hampshire’s first Congressmen, and, then as a U.S. Senator, until ill-health forced his resignation.

Of Livermore’s Holderness buildings, only Trinity Church remains. Trinity Church is a modest late 18th century vernacular building, with little architectural embellishment beyond the paneled woodwork of the pews and pulpit. It is, however, unique as the only 18th century New Hampshire church that retains its original appearance.

Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
