Former Ateneo Blue Eagles attend CIDG probe in Camp Crame

Welcome to The Manila Times, where we bring you stories that shape our world.

Today is June 16th.

Our top story:

Several former Ateneo Blue Eagles faced CIDG investigators in Camp Crame this morning. They were invited to shed light on their yearly team-building experience under former head coach Tab Baldwin. This is in connection with the deaths of two Ateneo basketball players. Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili drowned during a team-building activity in a beach resort in Aurora more than a week ago. According to the CIDG, preliminary investigation suggests that the deaths of the two student-athletes could qualify for a case of homicide and hazing. The CIDG, however, said the direction of the cases will depend on the results of their interviews with everyone involved. They include the coaching staff, players present during the activity, as well as university executives.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is urging the public to be vigilant for the “Big One.” “The Big One” refers to a potential earthquake in the West Valley Fault, which runs directly through Metro Manila. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum warns that this tremor could have far more severe consequences than the recent magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao. Solidum says the “Big One” is projected to have a magnitude of 7.2. That’s lower than the earthquake in Southern Mindanao. Solidum, however, noted that the epicenter of the Mindanao earthquake was offshore and only a few areas experienced strong shaking. According to the DOST chief, if that happened on land, more buildings would have collapsed or been destroyed.

Fishermen and seafarers were advised to avoid some areas in Palawan over the next two days. These are the designated areas where debris from two Chinese rocket launches may fall. The Philippine Coast Guard says China will launch the rockets today and tomorrow. Parts of the rockets are expected to fall within identified drop zones near Palawan. The Coast Guard advised the public not to approach, retrieve, or handle any suspicious objects that may be found at sea. It warned that such materials could pose risks to health and safety.
